SDU Tools: Version 28 is now released for download

Version 28 of our free SDU Tools for developers and DBAs is now released and winging their way out to our SDU Insiders.

You can find details on the tools here .

If you haven’t been using SDU Tools yet, I’d suggest downloading them and taking a look. At the very least, it can help when you’re trying to work out how to code something in T-SQL.

This is a huge release of the tools.

Updating T-SQL level

One of the biggest changes is that our base level for SQL Server is now the SQL Server 2016 level. Previously we supported back to SQL Server 2008. That has meant a large number of code changes, and in the case of the Azure and Fabric SQL Database versions, we’ve brought the code even further forward.

NOTE: If you still want support for earlier versions, we have archived v27 and you can find it here .

First release of Fabric Warehouse tools

We’ve also now added a first release of our SDU Tools ported (where possible) to Microsoft Fabric Warehouse. If you haven’t worked with it, you might suspect that the T-SQL is fairly similar to what you’re used to. If so, you’d be in for a bit of a shock.

This release also includes a few tools that are only in the Fabric Warehouse tools. In particular, the new tools related to the inlineability of functions.

New functionality

Along with changes to EmptySchema mentioned below, we’ve also added CreateOrEmptySchema and DropSchema. Each of these tools now copes with both incoming and outgoing foreign key constraints by removing them first, even where they are referring to objects in another schema.

ListComputedColumns locates any computed columns, based on database (for SQL Server only), a selection of schemas (or ALL), a selection of tables (or ALL), and a selection of columns (or ALL). For each located computed column, it returns the SchemaName, the TableName, the ColumnName, the Data Type, the definition of the column, and whether it is persisted and/or nullable.

We’ve done the normal updates to SQL Server versions and builds.

Breaking changes

We try really hard to avoid breaking changes but we’ve had a lot of people wanting us to change to the ISO 8601 mandated first day of the week, which is a Monday. We decided that this time when we are making so many code updates, is the right time.

The EmptySchema tool now no longer works across different databases. It’s like the Azure and Fabric SQL versions in that it only works in the current database.

To make the naming easier, and as we add more target environments, we’ve decided to remove the InCurrentDatabase suffix from all tools that have this. It basically affects many tools in the Azure SQL Database and Fabric SQL Database toolsets.

As a result, all the date-related tools now treat Monday as the beginning of the week, and as day 1 when numbers are used.

Please check these carefully before implementing the new version.
