Fabric RTI 101: Integrating RTI vs Azure Stream Analytics
Both Fabric Real-Time Intelligence (RTI) and Azure Stream Analytics (ASA) are designed to process streaming data, but they serve different roles within the Microsoft data ecosystem.

Fabric RTI is part of the broader Microsoft Fabric platform. It uses KQL (Kusto Query Language) as its foundation and is tightly integrated with OneLake, Power BI, and other Fabric components such as Eventstream and Activator. This integration makes it suitable for end-to-end real-time analytics, where streaming data is combined with historical data, transformed, visualized, and acted upon - all within one environment.
Azure Stream Analytics, in contrast, is a standalone service optimized for lightweight, event-driven workloads. It uses a SQL-like query language, making it accessible for scenarios where complex data modeling isn’t needed. ASA is well-suited for IoT pipelines, telemetry monitoring, and edge deployments, where the priority is low cost, simplicity, and quick setup.
In practice, many organizations use both. Stream Analytics often operates closer to the data source, handling preprocessing or filtering at the edge, while Fabric RTI provides deeper, cross-domain analytics and integration with visualization tools.
The distinction is mainly about scope and context:
- Use ASA for smaller, focused streaming jobs with minimal dependencies.
- Use Fabric RTI when you need streaming to be part of a unified analytical environment that also supports data warehousing, governance, and visualization.
